RECENT AWARDS

Angel of Vilcabamba by David E. Stuart won the 2009 PEN Southwest Book Award for Fiction.

The Pasó por Aquí Series on the Nuevomexicano Literary Heritage was awarded the 2009 State Historian's Award for Excellence in New Mexico Heritage Scholarship. To view all books in the series, go to the Browse page and search by series.

The Historical Society of New Mexico has honored two UNM Press books: No Settlement, No Conquest by Richard Flint was awarded the Fray Francisco Atanasio Dominguez Award for historic survey and research for 2008, and Cricket in the Web by Paula Moore received the Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá Award for outstanding publication for 2008.

Patricia Santana won a 2009 American Book Award for Ghosts of El Grullo from the Before Columbus Foundation. The book was also awarded the the Premio Aztlán Literary Prize for 2008 from the National Latino Writers Conference and the History and Literary Arts program of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. It also won the San Diego Book & Writing Award for General Fiction from the San Diego Book Awards Association (SDBAA).

Two UNM Press authors were honored at the Zia Award luncheon recently as part of the New Mexico Press Women's Association annual conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Paula Moore won the 2009 Zia Award for her account
of the Cricket Coogler case, Cricket in the Web: The 1949 Unsolved Murder that Unraveled Politics in New Mexico. Also, Mary Beath received the first ever Zia Chair Award for her book, Hiking Alone: Trails Out Trails Home.

New Mexico's Crypto-Jews was named
Best Nonfiction Book--Religion for 2008 by
the National Federation of Press Women. Cary Herz was also presented with the
New Mexico Press Women's Communicator
of Achievement Award, 2008, for exceptional achievement in the communications field
and service to the community.

Sam Quinones, author of Antonio' s Gun and Delfino's Dream and True Tales from Another Mexico, has been awarded a Maria Moors Cabot Prize for Outstanding Reporting on Latin America and the Caribbean for 2008.

Discarded Pages: Aracelli Cab Cumí,
Maya Poet and Politician by Kathleen R. Martin has won the A. B. Thomas Award
for best book on Latin America from the Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS).

Jack Loeffler, author of Survival Along the Continental Divide, Adventures with Ed, and La Musica de los Viejitos has been awarded a 2008 Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts for ethnomusicology and writing.

The Voyage of the Beetle was featured
at the 2008 National Book Festival in Washington D.C. by the New Mexico Library Association.
